Exhibition labels and poster design for Crisis, a Mexican artist’s journey through family and national trauma
Crisis was a photo and video exhibition by Mexican artist Victor Arroyo, held at FOFA Gallery, Montreal, in 2014.
Snapshots of buildings in decay near the shores of the artist’s native León, Guanajuato, are contrasted with archival footage from Mexico’s political turmoil during the 1990s. In this way, the exhibition establishes a parallel between national and personal trauma.
I designed the exhibition’s labels by calling attention to these co-existing narratives. I used a serif typeface for Arroyo’s poems and curatorial statement, and a sans-serif for the timeline of events in the artist’s life against the backdrop of the birth of North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN).
