Demystifying data for the cultural sector
Synapse C was a digital innovation centre dedicated to supporting Québec’s cultural sector in developing healthy, sustainable data practices. Its public awareness campaign, Un moment données, sought to demystify the role of data by equipping cultural organizations with accessible tools and practical knowledge, encouraging them to treat data as a vital aspect of cultural stewardship.
In partnership with Synapse C, I developed the creative concept, visual identity system, and supporting materials for Un moment données. Together, we transformed a complex subject into an approachable visual language accessible to non-technical audiences.

Data as a living matrix
At the heart of Un moment données is a matrix of interconnected circles, representing data points that come alive as they form relationships with one another. Photography of the people, practices, and moments that give cultural data its value shines through this matrix, revealing data as living and relational, inviting cultural organizations to approach it with curiosity rather than apprehension.
Echoes of early digital type
The campaign’s slogan Un moment données is set in HAL Timezone, a typeface inspired by “early digital typefaces emerging from the phototype era.” While classic and elegant, its letterforms carry the irregularities of a technology in transition, resisting the polished certainty often associated with data systems. This reinforces Un moment données’ proposition that data is not a closed technical domain, but an evolving practice in which cultural organizations can actively participate.
